This walk begins at either Mackleys bridge or Wildes bridge. Follow the towpath heading towards Kinoulton, passing the Devil’s Elbow.

Shortly after this you will reach Irish Jacks Bridge. Near the bridge is an information board about Vimy Ridge and the poplar trees.

Lombardy Poplar Trees

Turn right over the bridge and follow the track uphill, passing the ruins of a farm on your left. Continue uphill until you reach the edge of Kinoulton Gorse Woods. Do make sure that you turn around from time to time to admire the views.

Turn left along the edge of the wood, and after 40 metres pass through a hedge gap.

After passing through the gap, keep forward and then, shortly, left. Aim for the left-hand side of the hedgerow dividing the field.

As the track reaches flatter ground it bears right and then left and then right again. In the distance you can see the farm.

Aim to pass to the right of the farm. Do not enter the farm but aim for the corner of the field where there is a gate in the fence (not visible, until you get close).

Join the road and turn left walking into Kinoulton village. After passing the canal and St Lukes church turn left into Pinfold Lane.

At the end cross a footbridge go through the kissing gate and turn right along the edge of the meadows. You will pass through several fields including some that may contain cows. At the end cross over a stile onto a road and turn right to reach the village green.

From here you should return through the village (Main Street) to get back to canal again.

This will return you to Irish Jacks bridge and if you continue, you will reach Wildes bridge and then Mackley’s bridge.
