‘The Romantic Canal’
This twisty, deeply rural canal corridor follows the contours of the Vale of Belvoir. It may not have outstanding engineering features or a dramatic landscape but its quintessential charm lies in its unassuming, tranquil and classical English nature.
Published by the Grantham Canal Partnership “The Romantic Canal” contains maps of circular walks and linear walks of the canal from Nottingham to Grantham. History ranges from Sir Isaac Newton to Robin Hood through to the Dukes of Rutland and Belvoir Castle.
The Grantham Canal Towpath Walk is not an arduous physical challenge. Indeed with an ascent of less than one hundred and forty feet in thirty three miles it is in some respects very easy and for this reason it commends itself to walkers and cyclists of all ages and levels of fitness.
We hope that these linear and circular walks, all based on the 33 miles of the Grantham Canal, will inspire you to visit what we think is a very special landscape, where Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire meet.
